web site copywriterA lot of companies come to me looking for a new web site with all of the bells & whistles.  They want Flash, video, lot of pictures, oh and yeah some content.  Sometimes it seems like the copy is almost an afterthought.  Clients will often spend the extra money in their budget on a glitzy Flash banner but skip the copywriter.  "I'll write it myself" is a phrase I hear all of the time.

The problem is that most of us are not professional writers.  We don't know how to write good marketing copy that focuses on the needs of our target markets.  Heck, some companies don't even define who their target market is before they begin to write.  Remember, the copy shouldn't be about you and what you do.  The copy should be about the customer and how your product or service meets their needs or solves their problems.

Not to mention that it's hard to find the time to write all of your web pages when you have your own business to run.  This is the number one cause of project delays (ask any web developer and they'll tell you the same!)  The client is too busy to write the content themselves but is afraid or unwilling to hand over the reins to someone else.

"Nobody knows my business as well as I do so how can someone else write the web site copy?"  This is a question that I am often asked when I suggest using a professional copywriter.  The answer to this question is you're right and you're wrong.  Yes, you know you business better than anyone else, but a good copywriter will know the right questions to ask during an interview, learn about your business, research your industry and put it all into words that will sell your product or service.

Higher sales are the end result.  Isn't that what we all want?  So if you are considering a new web site - why not skip the glitzy banner and put your money into copy that sells.

Hi Liz,
Another great article. We run into this same situation a lot of times with our clients. They very rarely see the value in creating first round content lot alone ongoing content for a blog.

The power of content is amazing though and our jobs is to get our clients to understand this. The best thing could actually be experiencing it. This is hard to do, but with web analytics and a blog the client could see what actually happens when you write several articles (focused around targeted keywords that their prospects will use). Once they see that writing content on their site is actually bringing in a ton of traffic and better yet qualified traffic, it starts to become clear.

Part of the issue is this is new to most people and although they have heard the buzz of social media, they do not realize this is the key to making it work. It will take time to get everyone on board, but a great selling point to your customers could be that by committing to writing an article a week they will become a leader in their industry. And the people doing this and using the social media to promote their blog articles see their web traffic triple in as little as 3 months. This tends to interest people to at least think about writing.

I'm not sure what I think about a hired writer. This could work well if the writer is highly experienced in SEO and marketing/advertising copywriting around keywords. I have heard some good and bad stories of this. I think it is good for the customer to write their own copy and maybe have the SEO person rework the article to be found better in search engines.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks again for the great article.

Hi Dale,

Thanks for your comment. You make a lot of good points. You're right about great content bringing qualified traffic to your web site and using social media is a great way to promote your business.

I recommend hiring a professional copywriter for web site copy because most of my clients don't have the time to write and therefore put off finishing their web site for months, even years (no joke.) I have an excellent copywriter on my team who not only knows how to focus the content on the target market's needs but is also quite skilled in SEO and getting the right keywords into the copy.

Blogging, however, is a different story. Yes, you can hire someone to write blog articles for you, but I think blogging is best done by the client. Blogging is much less formal and does not have to have the same "marketing focus" that your web pages do.
