Custom WordPress Web Site

April 17, 2011 By Liz Gallagher

Custom WordPress Web Site for Hudson Public Library

WordPress was the perfect solution for the new Hudson Public Library web site. They wanted a new look & feel for their web site as well as the ability to update the web site content themselves. The web site needed to be interactive and engaging as well as informative, so that their patrons would find it useful and would want to frequent the web site.

The library staff also researched a number of special features that they wanted to include on the web site. After a careful review of their specifications, we determined that WordPress not only met all of their criteria but would also give them many options for future growth and enhancement.

Web Site Writing Tips

December 8, 2010 By Liz Gallagher

Web Site Writing TipsOften clients want to save money by writing their own web site copy.  Sometimes they just feel like no one else knows their business as good as they do, so who better to write the content for their web pages?  This may or may not be true – in most cases a professional writer is the best person for the job, but I can’t always convince clients to use a writer especially if the budget is tight.

Writing for the web is different than writing for any other medium.  You need to be short and to the point – you only have about 3 to 4 seconds to capture the reader’s attention.  If you don’t, they’ll hit the back button and be gone.  Your copy needs to focus not only on what you do but also on their needs.  If not, you may lose them.

Below are some tips that I like to give to my clients who want to write their own text.Read More

Blogs & Spam

September 29, 2010 By Liz Gallagher

Unfortunately, blogs and spam seem to go together.  Whenever you have a form on your web site – such as the comment form on your blog – you are opening yourself up to spam.

Blocking Spam

Luckily, WordPress has a plug-in that works great in capturing spam.  Read More

CMS Technical Support: Fee or Free?

September 8, 2010 By Liz Gallagher

I have this dilemma that I thought I’d throw out to my blog readers to get your opinion.  Some of my readers are customers, some are colleagues, some are competitors and some readers have no relationship to my company at all – so I’m eager to see how varied the response is.

A little background info

As little as 5 years ago, web sites were developed in programming languages that required special software for editing (i.e. Frontpage or Dreamweaver) and sometimes required programming knowledge (i.e. PHP, Perl, etc.)  In those days, it was easier and cheaper to have your web designer update your web site for you.  So in addition to designing and building new web sites, I also had a steady stream of income from maintaining web sites for my customers.

In January of 2009, I saw that the web site industry was moving toward Content Management Systems and I embraced this technology by learning WordPress and Drupal so that I could offer my clients multiple options.  Yes, this meant less income because now my customers could update their own web sites without paying me, but I knew in my heart that this was the right thing to do for my clients and my business. Read More

Design Matters

August 10, 2010 By Liz Gallagher
No Web Design Allowed

I recently came across a blog post on ugly websites which claimed that design is not all that important and some of the most successful websites on the Internet are in face quite ugly.  The four websites that were looked at are: Google, Craigslist, eBay & PlentyOfFish.

I don’t disagree that these web sites are both unattractive and successful, but I do disagree that all businesses can achieve that level of success with a poorly designed web site.

SEM vs. SEO – What’s the difference?

July 27, 2010 By Liz Gallagher

Search Engine Marketing and Search Engine Optimization

I’ve been working in the computer industry for over 20 years and the one thing that hasn’t changed is the use of acronyms.  I remember being a young engineer, discussing a project with my team and thinking how amazing it was that we all understood this strange language of acronyms intertwined with English.  An outsider listening in would probably understand little of the conversation and perhaps wonder if some of these “words” were from another language.

.co domains

Open Registration for the .CO Domain starts today. So if you missed out on getting your company’s name with a .COM extension, you may want to purchase the newly available .CO.

.CO was once the domain suffix reserved for businesses in the District of Columbia.  Columbia has decided to “cash in” on the .CO domain extension which is recognized worldwide as an abbreviation for Company, Corporation and Commerce.  This appears to be the first truly global and recognizable domain that the world has seen in years.

SEO: Website Grader

July 6, 2010 By Liz Gallagher

How does your site measure up?

Web Image Designs received a 95% from website grader

How well your web site performs in organic search results depends upon a lot of factors.  Organic search results are the non-paid listings in Google and other search engines.  Your Search Engine Optimization strategy must take into account many different things to rank well.  People often associate SEO with getting the right keywords on your web pages.  Although that is definitely a part of the story, there are many different aspects of SEO to think about.  If you have a large web site or you blog on a regular basis, your keywords will in effect take care of themselves.  Each one of your blog articles or web pages is typically written on a specific topic and the keywords will just come naturally… organically if you will.

When analyzing your SEO strategy you need to consider your web site copy, metadata, alt tags, inbound links, and so much more.Read More

Let’s have fun with social media

June 29, 2010 By Liz Gallagher

Trampoline Fun Trampoline Fun

Recently I realized that something was missing from my life – I’m just not having fun anymore.  Adults often get caught up in their day-to-day obligations — work, household chores, chauffeuring the kids around, etc. that we just don’t make the time for fun.  Saturday afternoon as I was folding laundry, I looked out the window and saw my daughter jumping on our trampoline alone.  I thought to myself, “What am I doing?  I should be out there with her having fun instead of folding this stupid laundry!”  So I did just that.  I went outside with my 2 kids and I have to say I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun!  I was awful and when I fell both of my kids yelled “popcorn!” and started bouncing me all over the place like a popcorn machine.  It was hysterical!  I laughed and screamed so loud my neighbors must’ve thought I was crazy!
